The Weary Realtor in Me

The Weary Realtor in Me

I’ve been selling real estate for nearly 40 years. How in the hell did that happen?

Actually, I know how it happened. I sort of slid into it, found I had a knack for it, and realized that the job was not actually about “selling” anything. It was about service, tolerance, dedication and compassion for others. It has been a very rewarding job.

In cleaning up and clearing out notes I’ve made to myself over the last decade, I came across a list of “resolves” I’d made regarding real estate. Given my fondness for lists as a writing prompt, I thought I’d share these here. Maybe one day soon I’ll get around to writing about each of them.

  • Do not discount your commission for anyone; they will never understand your value, but YOU understand it

  • You are not anyone's therapist

  • Channel an agent/colleague you admire when the going gets tough

  • Take care of yourself and be kind to you even when others aren’t being kind; they can’t help themselves in this moment

  • No hysterical back and forth

  • No more rushed listings

  • Block out vacation time

  • State your terms, keep your boundaries

  • No emails while feeling emotional – draft then cool down

  • Keep your sense of humor

  • Remember this is noble work and they’re lucky to have you

  • Say “no” more often
