I am in love for a moment. So much love, so little time. Somewhere between Soat and Lincoln, driving up 19th Avenue, I stopped and looked outside myself, outside my car, past the Sirius XM display, past the gas readout and speedometer, past the contractor’s green truck in front of me. I looked up to read the lightpost banner for a museum exhibit, then up beyond the red light, to a blue blue blue morning sky. so blue it’s like the first blue sky. The first blue sky. Waiting for me, above. Vast, limitless, blue blue blue. And I don’t know what I had been thinking. Maybe it was “Will I be late for my 9 o’clock?” Or “How might I have that difficult conversation?” Or “How is my son today, far away from me?” But I wasn’t thinking of those birds taking flight, or the wind — like God’s breath reminding me I’m alive. The strong morning light on the dirty buildings making them shine like temples. The granite in the sidewalks sparkling like snow. Like snow far away and alive on a lonely mountaintop somewhere.
