Hike to Green Butte
selfie with son by Cynthia Cummins
10.3.25 We hiked from the Old Ski Bowl Parking lot up to Green Butte Ridge on Mt. Shasta. (The photo above was taken on a different day, on a slightly different hike!)
Just for exercise. A day with fog and clouds obscuring the mountain. As we drove up we skirted in and out of it. It had rained the night before. Everything wet and damp. Cold and crisp. It’s easier for me to hump uphill when it’s not hot and sunny. Pale celadon sage. Rocks saturated with moisture. Black sand. These elements formed from the mountain. Living, breathing, breaking down, shedding. This was a day when one might have glimpsed The Mountain King above in his lair.
